TOKYO STORY @ 2:00PM
Released in Japan in 1953, the film is a thoughtful family drama about a retired couple visiting their grown children in Tokyo. Ostensibly simplistic, the film builds to a powerful but understated conclusion that captures Japan’s shifting postwar culture. The style exemplifies Ozu’s elegant approach to filmmaking: the camera remains at a consistent level throughout the film and rarely, if ever, moves. It’s not to be missed.
